Music Arts: Vocal Strand
Music Arts: Vocal Strand
Being in the VPA has unlocked all sorts of musical possibilities for me and shown me where my artistic passions lie. As a singer, it has put me on a path of improvement that has led to all sorts of festivals, including the All-Eastern Mixed Choir and the New England Choir. In addition to these festivals, it has led to numerous honors recitals. I worked with my voice teacher to sing powerful pieces such as Erlkönig, a process that I have found immensely rewarding. Secondarily, while I'm in the vocal music strand of the VPA, being in the VPA has pushed me in my other artistic focuses as well through its required classes like Music Theory, which have significantly benefited my songwriting ability. It has also opened up possibilities on my other instruments, which this year led to me auditioning for and becoming the first ever All-State Modern Band bassist. The VPA has been an integral part of my musical journey in high school, and I'm grateful for having been a part of it these past four years.

Theatre Arts
Theatre Arts
Being in the VPA allowed me to spend time and have fun with other creative students and ensured that I filled my high school years with art as well as academics. I am very thankful that I got to start my week off in the company of so many lovely art students every week. I am very excited to finish my high school career by directing a one-act play for my capstone project! After graduation, I plan to attend a four-year college to study English Literature and Linguistics. I also plan to continue my theatrical career in college.

Sylvienne Normandeau, Class of 2022
Visual Arts Concentration
"Being a member of the VPA has allowed me to branch out and take classes that I wouldn’t have enrolled in otherwise. While I do love art and definitely would have taken classes had I not applied, I likely would have stuck to drawing and painting classes. Through the VPA, I was able to try my hand at ceramics as well as discover a love of photography, and I’m very excited to have the opportunity to work with a talented local artist for my capstone project. My only regret as a member of the VPA is joining after my freshman year. Had I applied beforehand, maybe I’d have had time to broaden my visual art horizons even more."

Alissa Walkowiak, Graduate Class of 2019
Visual Arts Concentration
Attending Quinnipiac University for Graphics and Interactive Design and Masters in Interactive Media and Communications
"The VPA Academy was such a great experience being immersed with people that I could connect more easily with since they shared similar interests. Also, talking with the art teachers really enhanced my understanding of art in general but also posed the questions, “What does it mean to be an artist?”, and “What constitutes as art?” I find myself being able to form my own opinions about these larger questions, when I was not equipped with enough knowledge before to do so. In the future, I cannot wait to take web design, graphic design, and typography classes at my college, Quinnipiac University. I do love fine art but I am eager to do more digital art. Coming out of the VPA Academy, it really helped me set up my future, discover my passions, and made me grow more as a person and an artist. I have no clue if I would have been on the same career path if it was not for the academy. "

Katy Friesen, Graduate Class of 2019
Visual Arts: Concentration in Ceramics Attending Bennington College "My work is a play of different mediums, techniques, and ideas coming together to form one unified piece. I take in what surrounds me, noticing details, textures, and patterns as a base for inspiration. My two internships this semester contributed hugely to the idea of following art as a career. Thanks to the VPA academy and the wonderful art department at the school, I have discovered so much about myself." |
Mycroft Stone, Graduate Class of 2019
Digital Arts: Filmmaking and Communications concentrationA
Attending Norwich University of the Arts in England, majoring in Visual Effects
"The VPA Academy taught me nearly everything I know about filmmaking and the careers in the field of filmmaking. Now when I watch films recreationally, I have a hard time not taking the knowledge that my classes have given to me and applying it to the movie, seeing what techniques they used when making each scene. I don't regret taking a single class in my field during high school. The classes let me have more of a hands-on experience, which is one way that I learn well. I am very glad that I chose to go through high school enrolled in the VPA Academy."
